2024 WASSCE: Students Attack Teachers for Preventing Exam Malpractice

By: Emmanuel Amoah

At Christian Methodist Senior High School (Chrimeto) in New-Aplaku, Greater Accra Region, a group of students allegedly attacked their teachers after being prevented from engaging in exam malpractice during the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

According to reports, the students began pelting stones and sachets of water at the teachers after their efforts to cheat in the examination were blocked. In a video obtained by 3News, one of the assaulted teachers, Walter Yesutor Adanunyo, is seen fleeing as students pursued him.

Recalling the incident on Ghana Tonight with Alfred Ocansey, Mr. Adanunyo explained that the attack occurred shortly after Monday’s Integrated Science paper. He and his Head of Department were informed by a student that a mob had gathered at the school’s gate, intent on harming him for being strict in the exam room.

“We contacted the headmaster, who called in the police. They dispersed the students from the school compound, and we concluded the day’s activities,” Mr. Adanunyo narrated during a Zoom interview.

However, on Tuesday, September 17, when the police were no longer present, the students resumed their attack. Mr. Adanunyo recounted that the students began throwing stones and pure water at him and his colleagues—three permanent teachers and two service personnel, while accusing him of being too strict during the exams.

“Some students took alternative routes and ambushed us. They confronted me, asking why I was preventing them from cheating,” he said.

Mr. Adanunyo added that the police allegedly arrested four students, but he could not confirm if they were the same individuals involved in the confrontation. “I provided the names of the students in my statement at the police station, though I am uncertain if they were the ones arrested,” he concluded.

This incident is reminiscent of a similar occurrence during a past WASSCE examination at Bright Senior High School in the Eastern Region, where students exhibited violent behavior after being prevented from cheating.
