8 Measles Cases Reported in Volta Region Raise Concerns — Dr. Djokoto

By: Emmanuel Amoah

The Volta Region has reported eight confirmed cases of measles this year. Although this number is below the epidemic threshold, it still raises concerns, according to Dr. Kwesi Senanu Djokoto, the Regional Deputy Director of Health in charge of Public Health.

Dr. Djokoto emphasized the need for ongoing efforts to strengthen immunization programs in the region. He called for increased and sustained demand for both routine childhood vaccinations and COVID-19 vaccinations to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

These remarks were made during a stakeholder engagement meeting held on Wednesday in Ho, as part of the second-quarter risk communication and sub-committee on demand generation and vaccine uptake. The event was attended by about 80 members of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) risk communication sub-committee, along with department heads, unit heads, representatives from non-governmental organizations, and traditional leaders.

Dr. Djokoto highlighted the importance of high vaccine uptake in achieving herd immunity and controlling the spread of diseases. He also announced a national mass campaign against Measles/Rubella, scheduled to take place from October 2 to 6, urging the public to participate actively.

“Vaccination is widely recognized as a cost-effective measure, an investment in health security, a human right, and an essential public health intervention aimed at reducing childhood mortality and morbidity,” Dr. Djokoto stated.

He also noted that the region successfully vaccinated 2,556 children who had missed their vaccinations earlier this year, and an additional 3,703 children received vitamin A supplements.
