Customs officers at the Takoradi Port have intercepted approximately 25 million tablets suspected to be illicit drugs in a major operation aimed at curbing smuggling and transnational crime.
The huge consignment was discovered concealed in several shipping containers that had been declared as carrying ceiling fans. Acting on intelligence and risk profiling, customs officials subjected the containers to thorough inspection, leading to the discovery of the suspected drugs carefully packaged to evade detection.

Preliminary assessments indicate that the tablets are believed to be illicit pharmaceutical substances intended for distribution within Ghana and possibly across the West African sub-region. The interception is being described as one of the significant seizures at the Takoradi Port in recent times, highlighting the scale and sophistication of smuggling networks operating through the country’s ports.
Officials say investigations are currently underway to determine the exact nature of the substances, their origin, and the intended destination. Samples of the seized tablets have been sent for laboratory analysis, while persons linked to the consignment are expected to be invited for questioning as authorities widen the probe.

The Ghana Revenue Authority (Customs Division) has reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying surveillance at the nation’s ports and borders to combat the influx of illicit goods. The operation, according to officials, underscores the importance of intelligence-led enforcement and inter-agency collaboration in safeguarding public health and national security.

Authorities have warned importers and freight forwarders against engaging in illegal trade practices, stressing that all suspicious consignments will be rigorously examined. Further updates are expected as investigations progress and enforcement actions are taken against those found culpable.
