President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned an ultramodern 85-bed ward complex at the Police Hospital in Accra and announced major investments to improve healthcare, operational capacity and accommodation for personnel of the Ghana Police Service.

The President made the announcements on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, during the commissioning ceremony, where he commended the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Ghana Police Service for improvements in safety and security, as well as crime investigations across the country.

As part of the measures to strengthen the Police Service, President Mahama announced GH¢200 million for the expansion of the Police Hospital. He also announced plans to provide 40 armoured vehicles and GH¢300 million for the construction of 250 police housing units.

The newly commissioned 85-bed ward complex is expected to improve healthcare delivery for police personnel, their families and members of the general public.

President Mahama said the facility formed part of efforts to improve the welfare of police officers, who face physical and psychological demands in the performance of their duties.

He stressed the importance of providing prompt and quality medical care to officers who sustain injuries during operations, noting the need to ensure that they receive the necessary treatment.

The President also urged the management and staff of the Police Hospital to maintain high standards of hygiene, patient safety and professional care. He emphasised the need for proper maintenance of the new facility and its equipment to ensure that they serve their intended purpose over the long term.

In addition to the planned hospital expansion, President Mahama announced the donation of two new ambulances to support emergency response and patient care at the facility.

The planned provision of 40 armoured vehicles is expected to strengthen the operational capacity of the Police Service, while the GH¢300 million allocation for 250 housing units is intended to address accommodation needs among police personnel.

Meanwhile, the IGP, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, welcomed the commissioning of the new ward complex, describing it as an important step towards improving healthcare for police personnel, their families and the general public.

He said the expanded capacity of the hospital would help reduce the need to transfer patients to other health facilities and improve access to specialised medical care.

Mr Yohuno reaffirmed the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to maintaining the facility and ensuring that it provides quality healthcare to all patients.

The commissioning of the 85-bed ward complex, alongside the announced investments in hospital expansion, armoured vehicles and police housing, forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the welfare and operational capacity of the Ghana Police Service.
