The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and the Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG) have united with other labor unions to call for the immediate dissolution of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) board.
This demand follows SSNIT’s controversial attempt to sell a 60% stake in four hotels to Rock City Hotel, a company owned by Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong. The deal faced widespread criticism and was terminated on July 12, 2024.
In response, Organised Labour has announced a nationwide strike, effective immediately, until the SSNIT board is dissolved. Kenneth Koomson, Deputy Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, emphasized that the strike will continue until the board is disbanded.
UTAG has also called for the resignation of top SSNIT management, accusing them of breaching trust and mismanaging funds. The unions are demanding greater transparency and accountability in managing SSNIT’s assets.
Thousands of workers have already taken to the streets, protesting the attempted sale and calling for improved governance of the trust fund. The government has yet to respond to these demands, but the strike is gaining momentum, increasing pressure on officials to act.
