Anglican Priest Criticizes Leadership for Greed and Negligence

By Kekeli K. Blamey

Reverend Camillus Baba Ababagre, Parish Priest at Saint Cyprian’s Anglican Church in Bolgatanga, has expressed deep concern over the pervasive greed and negligence among leaders. He condemned the tendency of leaders to prioritize their selfish interests over the welfare of those they are meant to serve.

In a sermon themed “Let us be attentive to the needs of others,” Rev. Ababagre emphasized the duty of leaders, whether they be pastors, politicians, teachers, civil or public servants, or parents, to serve their communities wholeheartedly.

“Whatever position you occupy, let service lead. Do not concentrate on satisfying personal selfish interests,” Rev. Ababagre urged.

He highlighted that some religious leaders live in luxury at the expense of their congregations, and politicians often amass wealth rather than addressing the needs of their constituents. He stressed the importance of pastors and men of God focusing on the psychological, material, and spiritual needs of their congregations rather than exploiting them for personal gain.

Rev. Ababagre also called on politicians, teachers, and all leaders to care for those entrusted to them and to avoid exploiting their positions for personal wealth. He criticized the greed among family heads, noting that some parents selfishly manage their homes to the detriment of their children’s well-being.

“Let us always remember that we are put into leadership positions to take care of the people who put us there and, on whose behalf, we serve,” he added.

Drawing from the example of Jesus, who did not neglect the multitude even when he sought rest, Rev. Ababagre reminded the congregation that Jesus taught, performed miracles, and attended to the needs of the people unconditionally.

He called on Christians in leadership positions to commit themselves to their roles and offer their services unconditionally to those they serve.
