The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has sounded a stern warning against the spread of fake news that threatens Ghana’s security.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Dr. Dampare emphasized that the police will take swift action against individuals who peddle false information with the potential to disrupt the country’s peace and security.
The police chief’s warning comes amid growing concerns about the impact of misinformation and disinformation on national security and societal cohesion.
Dr. Dampare called for a collaborative effort among institutions and the public to address these challenges effectively.
“We must work together to combat the spread of fake news,” Dr. Dampare urged.
“Journalists have a critical role to play in verifying and cross-checking information before disseminating it to the public.”
The police chief stressed that disinformation and misinformation pose significant threats to national security and societal cohesion.
He assured the public that the police will take all necessary measures to ensure the security and safety of Ghanaian.
Dr. Dampare’s warning has been welcomed by media practitioners and civil society organizations, who have pledged their support in the fight against fake news.
