President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo paid tribute to Ghana’s founding fathers for establishing a solid foundation for the nation’s thriving society. He acknowledged their sacrifices, resilience, and visionary leadership, which have inspired citizens to strive for success despite various challenges.
In his Founders’ Day message, President Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians to continue revering those who fought for the nation’s union and to recommit to the ideals of freedom, justice, and democracy. Upon taking office, he proposed a legislation to Parliament to designate August 4th as Founders’ Day, expanding the celebration to honor all key figures in Ghana’s liberation history.
This date also recognizes two significant events preceding Ghana’s independence: the formation of the Gold Coast Aborigines’ Rights Protection Society on August 4, 1897, and the establishment of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) on August 4, 1947. These movements inspired Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to form the Convention People’s Party, leading to Ghana’s independence.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted the enduring values of rule of law, human rights, and democracy, which have guided Ghana through the years. He praised the Fourth Republic for its stability and significant advancements in governance, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and technology.
He emphasized the need to prioritize education, healthcare, inclusivity, and socio-economic development, and urged citizens to embrace national cohesion and good neighborliness to build a stable and prosperous society.
The President’s address underscored the importance of the founding fathers’ contributions and the continued commitment to their vision for a free and democratic Ghana.
