Rapper and University of Ghana student, Maradona Adjei Yeboah, also known as Guru, has officially lodged a formal petition with both the Electoral Commission and the Office of the Dean of Students Affairs for his disqualification from the upcoming 2024 UG SRC elections.
Guru’s disqualification, announced on August 16, 2024, by the UGSRC Electoral Commission, stemmed from his non-residency status, which was deemed a violation of Article 4(d)(ii) of the Constitutional Instrument (CI 24).
In response, Guru has submitted a petition to the UGSRC Judicial Board, requesting an interim injunction to delay the elections scheduled for August 26, 2024, until his case is addressed. He argues that barring non-resident students from participating in the SRC elections is unjust and violates constitutional principles, particularly since the SRC’s decisions impact all students.
The petition reads, “TAKE NOTICE that the Plaintiff/Applicant hereby prays for an order for an interim injunction to restrain the Defendant/Respondent, their agents, servants, and any persons authorised by them from proceeding with the election pending the final determination of this suit.”
Guru further claims that the UGSRC Electoral Commission overstepped its authority by interpreting and enforcing constitutional provisions, which he argues is the responsibility of the Judicial Board, not the Electoral Commission.
