Ghana Hydrological Authority Seeks $5 Billion To Combat Flooding in Ghana

By: Emmanuel Amoah

The Ghana Hydrological Authority has stated that it requires $5 billion to effectively address the country’s flooding issues.

In 2023, the Authority was allocated GH¢92 million through the National Flood Control Programme, an amount it deems insufficient.

During a session of the Assurance Committee in Parliament on Wednesday, Dr. John Kissi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, emphasized the importance of the $5 billion for comprehensive flood prevention and management nationwide.

“In 2023, under the National Flood Control Programme, we received about GH¢92 million to undertake flood mitigation works across the country.

“However, based on our assessment of the flood challenges across the nation, we estimate that $5 billion is needed to comprehensively address these issues.

“This estimate takes into account the needs of every city and town in every region across the country,” he explained.
