The Ghana Knowledge and Skills Bank (GKSB), a cutting-edge digital portal offering access to over 5 million online library archives and educational resources, has been officially launched to transform digital learning across the country.

This groundbreaking platform, funded by the World Bank and supported by MTN, serves as a comprehensive educational repository, covering all levels from basic education to tertiary and vocational training. As the second of its kind in Africa—following Egypt’s lead—the portal aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Four by promoting inclusive and equitable quality education for all.

A Revolutionary Learning Tool

The GKSB portal is free to access, allowing users to sign up without any charges. Designed to democratize learning, the platform offers students across Ghana, and beyond, equal access to high-quality educational content, regardless of location. It includes career planning tools, exam preparation resources, and a blend of global and local educational materials—ensuring a level playing field between students in both urban and rural settings.

The portal also offers publishers the option to upload their books for a fee, further enriching the diversity of available resources. By fostering self-directed learning and critical thinking, the GKSB is equipping students with the essential skills needed for the future.

Ms. Deborah Asmah, co-founder of Npontu Technologies—the Ghanaian company responsible for developing the platform explained that the GKSB goes beyond conventional learning systems by offering an interactive space where students can practice and refine their knowledge. She emphasized the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI), which allows students to request explanations and receive personalized guidance throughout their learning journey.

Driving Digital Transformation

In a speech, the Minister of Communication and Digitisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, hailed the GKSB portal as a milestone in Ghana’s digital education journey. She noted that the integration of AI tools elevates the platform, making it one of the most advanced on the continent. The portal also offers interactive learning experiences, offline access, and self-paced education, further underscoring its transformative potential.

Owusu-Ekuful highlighted the government’s broader commitment to digitalization, pointing out that the GKSB is part of a wider initiative to enhance connectivity nationwide. She urged students, teachers, and parents to embrace the platform, emphasizing its role in narrowing the educational gap between urban and rural areas.

Enhancing the Education System

The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, also underscored the importance of modernizing Ghana’s educational landscape to meet 21st-century demands. He noted that students cannot be expected to excel in an ever-evolving world while learning in outdated environments.

Dr. Adutwum described the GKSB as central to this educational transformation, offering state-of-the-art resources and tools that bridge the gap between traditional learning methods and the skills required in today’s workforce. He highlighted the platform’s AI features, which allow students to receive explanations in local languages, helping them overcome language barriers and better grasp complex topics.

Dr. Adutwum praised the collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Communication and Digitisation, which has been instrumental in ensuring that schools are digitally connected and equipped to offer advanced learning opportunities.

The Ghana Knowledge and Skills Bank portal is accessible at https://gksb.gov.gh, and all stakeholders are encouraged to engage with this new era of learning to elevate the nation’s educational outcomes.
