Ghanaian musician Maradona Adjei Yeboah, popularly known as Guru, has emerged victorious in the University of Ghana’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) presidential election. His campaign journey, marked by disqualifications, legal disputes, and other obstacles, ended in triumph as he secured 50.7% of the votes, alongside his running mate, Jeffery Adu-Yeboah.
The election, held with a voter turnout of 18,659, saw Guru and Adu-Yeboah amassing 9,455 votes to claim the top spot.
Just a week before the election, the University’s Appeals Board unanimously overturned Guru’s disqualification. His initial disqualification was based on claims that he was a non-resident student, which the SRC had argued made him ineligible to run. Another candidate faced a similar disqualification.
However, after a legal battle, the judicial board upheld the original decision, agreeing that the disqualification was valid. Despite this, the Vice Dean intervened, directing that the disqualified candidates and their running mates be included in the final list of presidential candidates.
A letter issued on September 15, 2024, instructed the University’s Electoral Commission to conduct balloting for all vetted candidates and communicate this to the candidates promptly. The names and positions of the candidates were also to be provided to the University of Ghana’s Computer Services (UGCS) to facilitate the electoral process.
Ultimately, the election proceeded as planned, and Guru’s victory was confirmed. He and his team are set to lead the SRC for the 2024/25 academic year.
