Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will launch the government’s latest digital healthcare initiative, E-Health, on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.
This groundbreaking system is part of the Akufo-Addo administration’s ongoing efforts to revolutionize healthcare delivery, following other innovative projects such as the drone medical delivery service, which ensures rapid delivery of essential supplies to remote areas, and the E-Pharmacy platform, which allows Ghanaians to purchase medications online.
The launch of E-Health marks a major shift in Ghana’s healthcare management, moving patient records from traditional paper systems to an electronic format. The system, developed by Lightwave e-Health Solutions in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, is the first of its kind in Africa. It aims to create a comprehensive electronic medical record system, integrated with protocols from Ghana’s Disease Surveillance Unit.
The E-Health system has already digitized patient records across teaching, regional, and district hospitals, enabling seamless access to medical data nationwide. This integration ensures that patients transferred between hospitals can have their records accessed digitally, eliminating the need for carrying physical medical files.
This initiative adds to Ghana’s significant healthcare advancements over the past seven years, which include the distribution of ambulances to every constituency, the operation of the drone medical delivery service that supports over 2,000 hospitals, and the expansion of public hospitals across the country.
The E-Health platform represents a milestone in Ghana’s healthcare evolution, providing real-time access to patient information for healthcare professionals, thereby enhancing decision-making and improving patient safety.
Dr. Bawumia, who has been a key driver of this initiative, expressed optimism ahead of the launch, underscoring its potential to transform healthcare service delivery.
“With E-Health, medical records will be consolidated into a single database accessible by networked hospitals nationwide, making healthcare more efficient and productive,” Dr. Bawumia stated. “Ghana will be the first African country to implement such a system, joining just three other nations globally.”
