With just 23 days left until Ghana’s 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, the National Media Commission (NMC) has launched the Ghana Media Watch App to combat fake news and promote transparency.
This innovative tool is a collaborative effort between the NMC, Ghana Journalists Association, Ghana Broadcasters Association, PRINPAG, and the Ghana Fact-Checking Coalition.
The app, available for download, enables citizens to report suspicious activities at polling stations, share multimedia evidence, and document incidents with timestamps and GPS data.
This real-time monitoring aims to ensure a fair and peaceful electoral process. Deputy Executive Secretary Mr. Alexander Bannerman emphasized the app’s role in promoting transparency, countering disinformation, and protecting journalists.
Executive Secretary Mr. George Sarpong highlighted the app’s importance in combating misinformation and hate speech, which often surge during election times.
“The Media Watch App will be vital in supporting a peaceful and fair election,” he said.
By promoting verified information and engaging the public in election monitoring, the NMC and its partners aim to counter threats of disinformation and foreign information manipulation.
With training and awareness sessions held across the country, the Ghana Media Watch App is a crucial tool for a transparent, peaceful, and fair election.
