The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the South Tongu district of the Volta Region has taken a bold step in promoting environmental health and sustainability. The agency organized a community health walk, which brought together over 500 residents, students, and stakeholders in the district.
The event, which was held under the theme “Safeguarding Ghana’s Environment Since 1974,” aimed to raise awareness about the importance of environmental protection and sustainability in maintaining good health. Participants carried placards and banners with messages promoting environmental conservation and sustainability.
Mr. Derick Ashia Logo, the Area Director of EPA in the South Tongu district, emphasized the critical link between environmental health and human well-being.
“A healthy environment is essential for human health, and it is our collective responsibility to protect the environment and promote sustainability,” he stated. The EPA also launched its new environmental education and awareness program, which aims to educate residents, especially children, about the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability in maintaining good health.
The program also forms part of the EPA’s principal goals to promoting sustainable practices, such as proper waste management, conservation of natural resources, and reduction of pollution. The health walk ended with a call to action, urging residents to take responsibility for protecting the environment and promoting sustainability.
Mr Logo pledged the EPA’s commitment to continue working with stakeholders to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable development in the district and beyond. By prioritizing environmental health, the EPA aims to reduce the burden of environmental-related diseases, such as respiratory problems, water-borne diseases, and other health conditions linked to environmental pollution.
