Effutu Municipality is currently facing a severe cholera outbreak, prompting the Minority Leader, Hon. Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, to urgently call on the Minister of Health for immediate intervention. In a letter dated February 11, 2025, Afenyo-Markin highlighted the escalating situation, revealing that the total number of suspected cases has surged to 412, with three confirmed deaths so far.
The outbreak has affected key health facilities, including Winneba Municipal Hospital, Winneba Health Centre, and the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Clinic. The majority of cases are emerging from coastal areas, leading to intensified health education efforts to curb the spread. However, the rapid increase in cases has placed significant strain on local health resources and personnel.

In his appeal, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the urgent need for financial support to ensure operational requirements such as fuel, sanitation efforts, and the provision of emergency supplies, including medical equipment and treatment kits. He also stressed the importance of logistical support for public health education and awareness campaigns.
He urged the Minister of Health to make the necessary resources and essential items available to the Effutu Municipal Health Directorate to contain the outbreak before it escalates further.
The situation calls for immediate action and collaboration between health authorities, stakeholders, and the community to control the spread of the disease and safeguard public health in Effutu Municipality.
