President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to develop Osu Castle into a major tourist attraction, as part of efforts to boost Ghana’s tourism and entertainment industry.
In his State of the Nation Address to Parliament on February 27, 2025, President Mahama outlined his vision for the castle, which includes a pedestrian precinct, arts and craft markets, jewelry and gold markets, and other attractions.
The 22-acre land surrounding the castle will be transformed into a hub for cultural exchange, economic growth, and job creation.
The project is expected to showcase Ghana’s rich cultural heritage and promote tourism, culture, entertainment and creative arts.

According to President Mahama, the development of Osu Castle is part of the government’s broader strategy to position Ghana as a premier tourist destination. The government’s flagship initiative, the Blackstar Experience, aims to establish Ghana as the gateway to Africa for the global diaspora.
The Blackstar Experience will feature curated cultural, historic, and creative arts experiences, including street carnivals, film weeks, and fashion festivals.
The initiative is expected to promote cultural exchange, economic growth, and national development.
In addition, President Mahama announced plans to promote meetings, conferences, and exhibitions tourism to diversify Ghana’s tourism offerings. The government will leverage Ghana’s peaceful and democratic environment to attract international summits and business conventions.
The President also pledged to revive the Marine Drive Project in Accra, which aims to transform 241 acres of Accra’s coastline into a vibrant tourism and economic hub.
The development of Osu Castle and the implementation of the Blackstar Experience are expected to create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and promote Ghana’s cultural heritage.
