Minister of Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak has vowed to recruit individuals who assist in identifying and arresting drug addicts particularly in the Zongo communities in Ghana.
During his speech at a sensitization program at Sabon Zongo in Accra on Thursday May, 8, the minister underscored the need to curb rising cases on the abuse of drugs in Zongo communities throughout the country.
The minister has charged individuals to identify drug addicts in these Zongo areas, report them promptly and in return be rewarded with recruitment in the security services if these volunteers possess appropriate certification.
” I’m assuring you all those who will join them when an opportunity comes for us to recruit people into the security services, all those who are helping and are qualified and are interested in the security services, I’m assuring you I will give them priority to join” he vowed.
He further cautioned police personnel to quickly respond to calls from volunteers who may apprehend drug addicts in the near future. Security personnel who fail to comply will risk transfer from their official job posts.
“They must respond swiftly when you call them, so that it makes the work easier, you cannot sacrifice your day, energy, night, and when you round them up, and the police are supposed to take them up, they refuse or delay” he warned.
Despite the call to action, the minister has also cautioned against acts of violence admonishing volunteers to promptly report to the police when they identify drug addicts in such areas.
The interior ministry has announced that is working with Narcotics Control Commission to ease the menace of drug abuse and addiction throughout these Zongo communities where they are prevalent.
