Accra Girls SHS Leads the Way With Staff Housing Project.

At Accra Girls Senior High School, the spirit of community has once again shone brightly. Last week, the school commissioned a staff accommodation project, built through a self-help initiative that brought together management, staff, students, alumni, and the Board of Governors.

For many, the new housing is more than just shelter, it is a lifeline for teachers who dedicate themselves to shaping the futures of hundreds of young girls. With more than 80 percent of students living on campus, the presence of teachers nearby is vital for guidance, discipline, and support.

The commissioning was a moment of pride. Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, who graced the occasion, described the project as a model of ingenuity and sacrifice. He assured the gathering that government was equally committed to improving education, announcing that ¢1 billion has been earmarked in the 2026 budget to finally phase out the double-track system.

Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Prof. Smile Dzisi, highlighted the broader meaning of the day. To her, it was a reminder that girl-child education requires not just enrolment but real investment in enabling girls to excel. She called on stakeholders to keep that vision alive.

The Headmistress, Mrs. Gifty Andoh, beamed with pride as she described the project as “a symbol of what is possible when people come together.” Under her leadership, the school community pooled resources, time, and commitment to make the bungalows a reality. “This is about vision, creativity, and motherly care,” she said, promising to continue steering the school with the same dedication.

Also present were the Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, Hajia Katumi, and the Chair of the Board of Governors, both of whom praised the school for its forward-thinking spirit.

This milestone comes at a time when the Ghana Education Service, through its new GES Change Makers series, is shining a spotlight on schools and individuals driving positive change. By celebrating such achievements, the initiative hopes to inspire others across the country to rise to the challenge of improving education.
