The devastating effects of the Akosombo dam spillage, which occurred in October 2023, continue to impact the lives of over 12,000 victims in the North Tongu constituency. The disaster had a disproportionate impact on nursing mothers, who have faced unprecedented challenges in caring for their infants amidst the displacement and destruction caused by the spillage.
The Akosombo dam has ravaged communities, leaving a trail of destruction and displacement in its wake. Nursing mothers, in particular, have borne the brunt of this disaster, struggling to access basic necessities like food, water, and shelter. The lack of adequate facilities and support has exposed them to increased risk of health complications, malnutrition, and emotional trauma.
Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament (MP) of North Tongu, has announced a GH¢100,000 emergency rent fund to support victims of the dam spillage, with a focus on nursing mothers. This initiative aims to provide critical accommodation assistance, enabling them to access safe and secure housing for themselves and their families.
Ablakwa made the announcement after filing his nomination for the upcoming elections, emphasizing his commitment to the total resettlement and compensation of all victims of the dam spillage. He expressed concern that 1,360 constituents still inhibit tents.
“The situation is unacceptable and inhumane,” he described. The MP pledged to prioritize the comprehensive resettlement and compensation of all victims in his next term and ensure a full recovery for those affected, especially nursing mothers.
