About 200 Ghanaian students at the University of Memphis, USA are stranded due to the government’s inability to settle a $3.6 million tuition arrears owed the institution since 2023.

Daily Memphian, an online newspaper situated in Memphis reported that Ghanaian students gained access to the school after the country [Ghana ] was chosen as honored country for Memphis in May 2022.

A total of 185 Ghanaian students are currently stranded overseas since they have been mandated to vacate the University premises latest by August 9, this year.

However, students with alternative repayment options can foot their tuition bills in order have continuous access to the university facility until the end of their study period in the United States.

President of Memphis University, Dr. Bill Hardgrave during a media interaction with Action News 5 revealed that these Ghanaian students are sponsored by the government which has failed to foot the tuition fees for some time now.

He further assumed that the delay in repayment might be due to Ghana’s change of government calling for an immediate necessary action to be taken in order to keep these students in the school.
“I think there was a regime change in Ghana and that affected the budget, but we’re hopeful that gets corrected because we’d love to keep those students on campus” he concluded.
