Accra Metropolitan University (AMU) marked a historic moment with its recent Graduation and Honorary Doctorate Conferment Ceremony, celebrating not only its graduating class but also its transformation into a fully chartered university.
Delivering the keynote address, Founder of AMU, Prof. Joshua Alabi, reflected on the institution’s journey from its roots as Laweh Open University to becoming a pioneering force in online and flexible education in Ghana. He described the recent Presidential Charter awarded to the university as a significant milestone, granting it full autonomy to manage its academic affairs, including admissions, curriculum design, and degree conferrals.
“This Charter is a bold testament to our commitment to innovation, discipline, and service,” Prof. Alabi stated. “We are proud to be charting new paths in higher education in Ghana.”
Prof. Alabi extended his appreciation to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) for its unwavering support and guidance throughout the university’s transformational journey. He also announced future expansion plans made possible by land commitments from the traditional authorities in Nungua, positioning AMU for growth in infrastructure and student capacity.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees on distinguished national figures for their remarkable contributions to public service and technological advancement:
Inspector General of Police, Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohonu, for his exemplary leadership and reforms in national security.

Archbishop Dr. Charles Agyinasare, for his impact in spiritual and moral leadership across the nation.
Ing. Dr. Patricia Obo-Nai, CEO of Telecel Ghana, who was honoured with an Honorary Doctor of Science (DSc) for her outstanding leadership in telecommunications and advocacy for technology-driven transformation.
The event was a celebration of academic achievement and national development. Prof. Alabi charged the graduating class to carry forward the core values of AMU innovation, discipline, and service as they step into the wider world.
“You are not just graduates,” he said. “You are ambassadors of excellence, called to lead with integrity and purpose.”
In a spirit of celebration, the university community extended heartfelt congratulations to all honourees and graduates. Special recognition was given to Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai, whose award highlights the increasing role of women in STEM and corporate leadership in Ghana.
“Congratulations to IGP Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohonu, Archbishop Dr. Charles Agyinasare, Dr. Patricia Obo-Nai, and all those who graduated today at Accra Metropolitan University. Your achievements reflect the values of service, innovation, and progress that AMU stands for.”
The ceremony concluded with cheers, music, and the symbolic tossing of graduation caps a fitting close to a remarkable day of honour, transformation, and new beginnings.
