Ghanaian singer and songwriter Akwaboah has shared his thoughts on the origins of Valentine’s Day concerts in Ghana.
In a recent interview on Daybreak Hitz with DJ Slim, Akwaboah Jr. discussed fellow musician Kwabena Kwabena’s claim that he pioneered Valentine’s Day concerts in Ghana.
Kwabena Kwabena had stated that his 2014 concert was the first of its kind. However, Akwaboah revealed that he had previously performed at Kwabena Kwabena’s concert on February 12th, and was surprised to see Kwabena Kwabena announce a Valentine’s Day concert on February 14th in 2024.
Akwaboah explained that he was initially scheduled to perform at Kwabena Kwabena’s concert, but was surprised by the date change. “I was kinda surprised… I know his concert is always on the 12th of February, and so what we do is on the 12th, I perform for him, and on the 14th, he comes on my show.”
When asked about the cancellation of his 2024 Shades of Love concert, Akwaboah Jr. cited gigs outside the country and a desire for a larger venue. He eventually secured the Grand Arena, but the concert was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.
Akwaboah acknowledged that he was hurt by Kwabena Kwabena’s decision to change the date of his concert, but emphasized that he did not have a problem with him. “In as much as I was hurt, I didn’t have a problem with him… I am not the only one that can do a show on that day.”
Akwaboah also discussed his current relationship with Kwabena Kwabena, stating that they had met at Royal Senchi and talked about their respective concerts. “It’s been cool… we met at Royal Senchi, we talked about it, I asked whether they’re doing this year, and he said yes, and I was like, okay, cool.”
Akwaboah’s ‘Shades of Love Concert 2025’ is set to take place at La Palm on February 14th, with regular tickets selling for 300GHS and VIP tickets selling for 500GHS.
