Akwatia By-election Slated For September 2.

The Electoral Commission has slated Tuesday, September 2 to hold the parliamentary by-election some moments after the demise of Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

In an official statement signed by EC chairperson, Jane Mensah, the holding of this by election is in line with Article 112 (5) of Ghana’s constitution which mandates a by election to replace a deceased member of parliament.

By this notice served, the EC wishes to inform prospective candidates to submit their nomination forms from August 11 through to August 13 between the hours of 9:00am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm daily.

The nomination forms is available on the EC’s official website (www.ec.gov.gh) since the issuance of the release up until August 13.

The nomination forms may be delivered by the prospective candidate or his seconder to the Denkyembour District Office once completed.

The nomination forms must have the following,

  • A signature of two registered voters (proposer and seconder).
  • An assent of 18 other registered voters within the constituency for validation of the proposed candidate.
  • An endorsement by the prospective candidate.

Notably, male candidates
are required to pay an amount of Ten Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC10,000.00) to file their nominations. Females and persons with disabilities will have to pay Seven Thousand Five Hundred Ghana Cedis (GHC7,500.00) in full to file their nominations forms.

Significantly, the New Patriotic Party have endorsed Executive Officer of Owuo Mining Company, Solomon Kwame Asumadu as their preferred candidates whilst the National Democratic Congress party have slated August 4 for the parliamentary primaries scheduled towards the by election however. So far A&CEmpireRadio has not recorded any independent candidate showing interest in the Akwatia parliamentary by-election in order to represent the constituency in parliament.
