Atomic Junction Overpass to Temporarily Close for Repairs from October 3 to 22

The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has announced a temporary closure and diversion of the Atomic Junction overpass in Accra from October 3 to October 22, 2024, to repair exposed expansion joints.

During this period, the overpass will be closed nightly from 8 PM to 6 AM, with traffic rerouted to alternative routes. The Atomic Junction Flyover, which connects Adenta and Madina to Legon along the N4 highway, has developed issues with its expansion joint coverings, causing concern among motorists due to unsettling sounds produced when vehicles pass over the affected areas.

Expansion joints are critical to the structural integrity of bridges, allowing concrete to expand and contract naturally without cracking. They also ensure smooth vehicle movement, enhancing safety and reducing long-term maintenance costs.

The current condition of the Atomic Junction Flyover has led to discomfort for drivers, as some joints remain exposed despite temporary bitumen patches.

The GHA’s decision to carry out the necessary repairs follows concerns raised about a visible nut and metal cover on the overpass, which pose potential hazards. Motorists are urged to note the closure and follow the designated detour routes during the repair period.
