The Municipal Education Directorate in Bawku has temporary shut down the Bawku Senior High School in the Upper West region over a killing that occurred on the school’s premises.
Media reports presented that unknown assailants stormed the school’s premises last Saturday, July 27 during the early hours of the evening, ransacked the dormitories and pulled out a student identified to be one Hakim Kundima, pulled him outside and shot him resulting into his death.
The deceased student’s body has since been delivered to his family by the Bawku divisional police commander.
Brother to the deceased, alleged to citinews that circumstances surrounding his brothers death might be related to conflicts surrounding the Bawku Municipality .
Following this incident that occurred, the Bawku Municipal Director of Education, Isaac Agbeko Azasoo ordered that the entire school be shut down temporarily until further notice.
Eventhough the police is yet to release an official statement concerning the shooting, at the moment, none of these assailants hand been apprehended.
Tensions in Bawku have heightened recently due to the inter tribal wars plaguing residents within the Bawku Municipality and its surrounding environs.
On the same day, two other students were shot and confirmed dead at the Nalerigu Senior High School in the North East Region.
The government in a release signed by government spokesperson, Felix Ofosu Kwakye have intensified curfew measures in order to protect residents and to enforce peace within the community. Currently, the Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to the municipality to enforce peace.
To this end, residents are to abide by a 2pm through to 6am curfew and the enforcement on a total ban on all weapons within the municipality.
“While regretting the inconvenience this peace enforcement intervention may cause to peace –
loving people within the affected areas, the Government of Ghana remains committed to restoring peace and stability in Bawku and other affected areas and is taking every necessary measure to ensure the safety and security of all residents, including students.” it ended.
Students are to wait on the government for further directives before reporting back to the school’s premises for academic activities.
