Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2024 Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is at the forefront of coordinated efforts to secure bail for the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.
Chairman Wontumi has been in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) since Tuesday, May 27, amid ongoing investigations into allegations of fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.
Although bail was granted on Wednesday, May 28, set at GHS 50 million, Wontumi remains in custody due to challenges meeting the imposed conditions. His continued detention has ignited political tensions, including a boycott in Parliament and public demonstrations by Minority MPs, who have described the bail terms as overly harsh and politically charged.
Speaking to the media, Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NPP, Divine Agorhom, confirmed that Dr. Bawumia, along with other senior party leaders, is actively working to secure Wontumi’s release.
“It’s not just His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia—every top figure in the party is involved,” Agorhom stated. “We’re hopeful that EOCO may consider softening the bail terms to make them more attainable.”
He added that the party is also weighing legal strategies should EOCO decline to revise the conditions.
“If that doesn’t work, the legal team is prepared to seek a variation through the courts. If all else fails, we’ll mobilize resources to meet the terms and get him out.”
As the NPP leadership rallies behind Wontumi, the issue continues to spark debate nationwide, with legal, political, and public scrutiny mounting over what many see as a high-stakes political and legal standoff.
