Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed deep concern over violent disruptions that marred the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency, warning that such acts pose a serious threat to Ghana’s democratic future.

Speaking in reaction to the chaos that unfolded on Thursday, Dr. Bawumia described the attacks on NPP supporters and party officials as “very disturbing,” particularly as they occurred in the presence of police officers who were reportedly overwhelmed and unable to respond effectively.

“This is not the democracy we fought for. This is not the democracy Ghanaians deserve,” he stated, accusing the National Democratic Congress (NDC)—under whose watch the violence erupted—of betraying the very principles they pledged to uphold upon taking office in 2024.

The Electoral Commission had called for a rerun in 19 polling stations in the constituency following disputed results from the December 7, 2024, general elections. However, the process turned chaotic when alleged political thugs stormed the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor, sparking confusion and fear among voters and election officials.

Eyewitnesses reported that the group of well-built men arrived in a pickup truck and on motorbikes, launched coordinated attacks, and physically assaulted several individuals.

Among those injured was former Member of Parliament and ex-Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson, who was reportedly dragged and stomped in the chest and groin area before police intervened. Also caught in the melee were NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and a female party agent, both sustaining injuries.

In a separate incident, a JoyNews journalist covering the elections was assaulted by one of the attackers, prompting strong reactions from media rights advocates.

The escalation of violence during what was meant to be a peaceful rerun has sparked nationwide concern, with political observers and civil society groups calling on the Electoral Commission, police, and political parties to ensure accountability and restore public confidence in the electoral process.

Dr. Bawumia urged the security agencies to investigate the incidents thoroughly and ensure that those responsible face the full rigour of the law. “We cannot allow impunity to define our politics,” he stressed.
