Public basic schools across Ghana have received long-awaited Capitation Grant disbursements, following the government’s clearance of all arrears from 2023 to date, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed.

The GES, in a statement issued on Wednesday, July 23, described the release of the funds as a critical relief for school administrators who have been managing operations amid financial constraints. The grant, which is meant to support essential school needs such as teaching and learning materials, maintenance, and basic administrative expenses, had not been disbursed since 2023.

According to the GES, the recent payment signals renewed government commitment to ensuring the smooth running of basic education, despite ongoing economic pressures.

“The release of these funds will allow headteachers to better manage their schools and improve the delivery of education at the grassroots level,” the statement noted.

The GES commended the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance for facilitating the disbursement and acknowledged the perseverance of school heads who maintained academic activities during the funding gap.

It further urged school leaders to adhere strictly to the grant utilization guidelines and assured the public that regional and district monitoring teams will intensify oversight to ensure transparency and effective use of the funds.

The Service reiterated its commitment to improving educational outcomes and strengthening accountability systems within basic education institutions nationwide.
