Mexico is facing serious unrest after reports emerged that Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” had been killed during a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, on February 22. He was the leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), and his reported death has caused tension and violence in different parts of the country. Following the news, many of his supporters reacted angrily. In several areas, cartel members and loyalists took control of public spaces, creating fear and confusion. Streets became unsafe, while some hospitals and airports were overcrowded and disrupted by the presence of these groups. This situation made it difficult for normal activities to continue, as people struggled to move around safely.
Reports from Al Jazeera and The New York Times indicate that the unrest quickly turned violent. There were cases of arson, with cars, shops, and gas stations set on fire. In addition, shootings were reported in some areas, forcing residents to stay indoors out of fear for their safety.
The city of Guadalajara has been one of the most affected areas. This is especially worrying because the city is preparing to host matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With major games expected to attract international visitors, concerns about safety have increased significantly.
The Jalisco New Generation Cartel is one of the most powerful criminal groups in Mexico. It started around 2010 after the collapse of another cartel. Under the leadership of “El Mencho,” the group grew quickly and became known for its violent methods and strong control over drug trafficking activities. Over time, the cartel expanded its operations across many regions. It became feared for attacking both rival groups and government forces. Its influence has made it one of the most dangerous organizations in the country.
Many people are now worried about what will happen next. Residents fear that the violence could continue or even get worse as different groups fight for control. Businesses have been affected, and daily life has been disrupted in many communities. So far, FIFA has not released any official statement about the situation, despite growing concerns about safety during the upcoming tournament.
Security forces have been deployed in affected areas, but the situation remains tense. The death of such a powerful cartel leader could lead to more instability, making it a difficult time for the country as it tries to restore peace and order.
