Cholera Outbreak Hits Western Region, Claims 15 Lives

A cholera outbreak in the Western Region has claimed 15 lives, with 1,347 cumulative cases reported as of last Thursday. The Western Regional Health Directorate has launched a cholera vaccination exercise in affected areas, including Sekondi-Takoradi, Effia-Kwesimintsim, Shama, and Ahanta West. The outbreak, which was first reported in late November, has overwhelmed health facilities in the region. The vaccination exercise, which began last week, aims to cover over 200,000 residents in the affected areas.

According to Dr. Yaw Ofori Yeboah, Regional Director of Health Services, insanitary food preparation and sales, indiscriminate refuse dumping, poor waste management, and open defecation are major factors contributing to the outbreak.

“The Rapid Response Team (RRT) has been activated to implement targeted interventions in partnership with Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and key partner agencies,” Dr. Yeboah said. He added that the enforcement of bye-laws, continued disinfection of communities, and education of food vendors are also underway.

“We are also distributing Intravenous (IV) fluids and antibiotics to designated facilities to support case management,” Dr. Yeboah said. The Western Regional Health Directorate has also intensified public education and awareness campaigns to prevent the spread of cholera.

Residents are being advised to practice good hygiene, adhere to health directives, and improve sanitation to prevent the spread of the disease. Cholera, however is a highly infectious disease that can be fatal if left untreated. Drinking contaminated water or eating food prepared with contaminated water can lead to infection. Symptoms of cholera include diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration.

Treatment for cholera is free in both government and private hospitals. Residents are advised to seek medical attention immediately if symptoms occur.
