Comply to 15% Fare Reduction; COPEC to Commercial Drivers.

The Chamber for Petroleum Consumers – COPEC has issued a directive towards commercial vehicle drivers to strictly comply by the 15% adjusted transport fares effective Saturday, May, 24 2025.

During a media interaction with the Executive Secretary of COPEC, Duncan Amoah on Channel One TV, he commended the impending reduction as a significant move by the various driving unions across the country. “Ghanaians will be grateful to the transport operators for heeding calls for a reduction in fares. This is what responsible associations or unions are expected to do. A 15% cut is significant” he acknowledged.

Notably, the recent drop in fuel prices during the second pricing window of May has led to the call for a significant drop in transport fares for commercial vehicles.

Mr. Amoah during the interaction added that the body will call for a further reduction of the transport fares if fuel prices reduces to GHï¿ 10.00 price mark.
“If the trend continues and we reach GH₵10 per litre or see further strengthening of the cedi, we’ll engage the transport operators again. But for now, this is a good gesture.” he said.

On May 16, prices of fuel saw a significant drop across various pumps with Petrol selling at GH¢13.27, Desiel at GH₵ 14.40 and Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) at GH₵16. This sharp reduction has been attributed to the Cedis recent appreciation against the U.S dollar.

Meanwhile, Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Abbas Ibrahim Imoro has likened the Union’s decision to reduce transport fares to lottery. “What we’ve done is just like playing the lottery—it’s a big risk. It can either go against us or benefit us, but we believe it’s the right thing to do” she said.

Despite these fears, Mr. Imoro advised all drivers to strictly adhere to the 15% fare reduction or face further consequences.
“If your Union has decided, you have no option but to comply. If any driver refuses to reduce the fare as directed, passengers should report them to the nearest police station. We are not saying anyone should be beaten. Please, don’t beat any driver just report them.” Mr. Imoro made this remark during an interaction with Adom FM.
