The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has issued an alert to members of the public against the rising numbers of AI generated contents or deepfakes resulting in wrongful investments and false endorsements by notable personalities within the country.
Issuing an alert to the general public, the CSA noted an extreme rise in the circulation of these AI generated contents targeting notable personalities like the President, Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, Government
Appointees, Media Houses, and Media Personalities. Countering on the prominence and credibility of these personalities, these deepfake videos have these notable personalities endorsing “fake investment
schemes, fraudulent financial platforms, or unapproved medical products and cures,
including diabetic and weight-loss drugs.”
Explicitly, the CSA clarified that these deepfake content creators leverage on the various artificial intelligence platforms to create audios that mimic these notable personalities endorsing fake financial schemes and drugs at the peril of consumers and customers.
It added that these fake videos are mostly circulated on social media particularly facebook.
In order to spot these misleading contents which has taken a wide spread all over the internet, the CSA has directed that social media users look out for cues such as; mismatched lip movements with the audio, unnatural eye movements or blinking, a robotic or overly polished voice that does not sound quite right and an unusual lighting, shadows, or background inconsistencies.
Additionally, individuals have been advised to properly verify these promotional videos from official platforms before conducting business with them.
The CSA has assured that it is working keenly with social media platforms and law enforcement agencies to eradicate the widespread of these contents however in the meantime, individuals are to look out for the cues mentioned earlier in order to prevent future repercussion.
