Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Monday held a high-level engagement with former Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) from across the country in Accra, as part of efforts to mobilize support for his bid to become the next flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The closed-door meeting brought together a wide range of past appointees under NPP administrations, many of whom have declared open support for Dr. Bawumia’s leadership ambitions. The 2024 general election may be over, but for the NPP, the internal race to choose a new presidential candidate for the next election is heating up and Dr. Bawumia is one of the front-runners.
“Our quest to bounce back requires the collective efforts of all,” Dr. Bawumia told the gathering. “I urged my fellow patriots to join hands so we realize this objective together.”
Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude for the show of support, noting that the experiences and networks of the former MMDCEs remain a crucial resource for rebuilding the party from the grassroots.
“I am grateful for the overwhelming number of MMDCEs who have declared an intention to campaign for and support me. Together, we will make the great New Patriotic Party (NPP: Development in Freedom) stronger and better,” he said.
Currently, Dr. Bawumia is contesting for the NPP flagbearer slot against other prominent party members, including former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Bryan Acheampong. The party’s internal election is expected to be highly competitive, with each candidate bringing a unique base of support and vision for the NPP’s future.
During the meeting, Dr. Bawumia made a symbolic point about Ghana’s democratic tradition, drawing attention to a pattern of power transfer between political contenders in the Fourth Republic.
“Every president in Ghana has handed over power to someone they once contested. From Rawlings to Mahama, the pattern is clear: power passes between contenders,” he explained.
“President Rawlings handed over power to Kufuor, whom he contested in 1996. Kufuor handed over to Atta Mills, whom he contested in both 2000 and 2004. Akufo-Addo succeeded John Mahama, whom he contested. So the question is: who is John Mahama going to hand over power to,is me Dr Bawumia.
