Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced that he has received overwhelming support from more than 60 Members of Parliament (MPs) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for his 2028 presidential ambition.

In a statement shared across his official communication channels, Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude for the show of confidence and solidarity from the lawmakers, describing it as a strong endorsement of his vision for the future of Ghana.

“I am happy to have received the support and endorsement of over 60 NPP MPs for my 2028 presidential bid,” Dr. Bawumia said. “Their encouragement reaffirms my commitment to the party and to the development of our beloved country.”

The endorsement is seen as a major political boost for the former Vice President, who contested for the NPP’s flagbearership in 2023 and remains one of the most influential figures within the party.

Dr. Bawumia, who was the NPP’s presidential candidate in the 2024 general elections, lost to former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Despite the defeat, his stature within the NPP remains strong, and the early endorsement for the 2028 race signals ongoing internal alignments within the party.

According to sources within the party, the MPs cited Dr. Bawumia’s leadership qualities, dedication to public service, digital transformation initiatives, and his role in modernizing Ghana’s economy as key reasons behind their decision to back him once again.

Political analysts believe the move is a strategic step by Bawumia’s loyalists to solidify his influence within the NPP and prepare the ground for a political comeback in 2028.

Meanwhile, party executives have encouraged members to stay united and focus on rebuilding and reorganizing ahead of the next election cycle, emphasizing that leadership renewal and resilience are critical to the party’s revival.

Despite the timing of the endorsement raising eyebrows in some political circles, it highlights Dr. Bawumia’s continued relevance in Ghana’s political landscape and sets the stage for what could be another historic campaign in 2028.
