The Electricity Company of Ghana has cautioned the general public against moving installed meters without official authorization from the body.

ECG in a release shared that any individual who tries to move or successfully moves an ECG meter without prior engagement with officials of the ECG could face legal prosecution for that matter.

ECG have explained that each of its installed meters have been assigned to a specific location and appropriate measures must be taken to facilitate its movements to other locations [if the need arises].

Further elaborating on this directive, ECG’s general manager for external communications, Dr. Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku explained that meter transfers on permanent structures such as residential buildings are not permitted. He added, that the company allows for transfers on movable structures such as kiosks, containers etc but with prior approval from the Electricity Company of Ghana within the same district.

“so you have to make a request for your meter to be transferred, this request goes to the district office, the office will do an assessment of your request and if it is possible the district will take it out and assist the customer” Dr. Ayiku Ayiku explained during an interview with Accra based ChannelOne News.

ECG’s caution against these illegal meter teansfers is in the bid to prevent the disruption in service delivery within the energy sector. ECG has recorded that the unapproved transfers interferes with billing accuracy within the system.
