In a landmark diplomatic move, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Council of Ministers has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana as the sole candidate from the West African region for the position of Chairperson of the African Union (AU) when the rotating AU chairmanship returns to West Africa in 2027. The decision was taken during the 95th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers held in Abuja, Nigeria, on December 12, 2025.

The endorsement reflects a strong vote of confidence in President Mahama’s leadership credentials and his long-standing commitment to African unity, regional integration, and multilateral diplomacy. The Council’s recommendation will now be forwarded to the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, which is expected to formally adopt the declaration at its forthcoming meeting on Sunday, December 14, 2025.

Under the rotational leadership system of the African Union, each of Africa’s five regions takes turns to assume the ceremonial role of AU Chairperson. When West Africa’s turn comes in 2027, it will be an opportunity for the region to influence continental priorities on governance, peace, security, economic integration, and youth empowerment.

By rallying around a single candidate, ECOWAS has demonstrated unity and strategic coherence, aiming to amplify West Africa’s voice within the AU’s leadership structures. The Council’s recommendation underscores the importance of presenting a unified front to secure influential positions in continental decision-making bodies, enhancing the region’s impact on the future trajectory of African cooperation.

President Mahama’s nomination is grounded in his extensive political experience, diplomatic engagements, and a track record of championing Pan-African ideals. As Ghana’s head of state, Mahama has consistently advocated for stronger continental cooperation, economic integration, and institutional reforms within the African Union framework. His vision aligns with broader ECOWAS commitments to regional solidarity and collective action on issues such as conflict resolution, economic development, and political governance.

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who announced the endorsement, described it as a profound expression of confidence and support from the ECOWAS member states. In a social media statement, he thanked his counterparts for the confidence reposed in President Mahama, highlighting the significance of the support for Ghana’s “visionary and Pan-African President.”

With the Council’s endorsement complete, the spotlight now shifts to the Authority of Heads of State and Government, which will meet to ratify the recommendation. Should the Authority adopt the declaration, President Mahama will officially become West Africa’s nominee for the AU Chairpersonship in 2027 placing him in contention for one of Africa’s most prestigious leadership roles.

The position of AU Chairperson serves as a key platform for continental advocacy and representation, allowing the incumbent to steer AU priorities, convene leaders, and champion initiatives that resonate across Africa’s political and socio-economic landscape. A successful bid by President Mahama would not only elevate Ghana’s diplomatic profile but also reinforce West Africa’s commitment to inclusive and visionary leadership on the continent.

ECOWAS’s unanimous backing of President Mahama is being widely seen as a reflection of collective resolve to enhance West Africa’s influence within continental governance structures. It sends a powerful message of solidarity and sets the stage for a competitive and coordinated campaign as the African Union prepares for its leadership rotation in 2027.

As Africa continues to navigate complex challenges from economic recovery to security threats and democratic consolidation the selection of the AU Chairperson will be pivotal. Should President Mahama’s nomination be confirmed, West Africa will be well positioned to shape the AU’s agenda at a critical juncture in the continent’s development journey.
