Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu has ordered for the cancellation of the teachers licensure exams effective August 30, 2025.
Addressing the media, the sector minister charged stakeholders to worked assiduously towards scrapping the graduate teachers examination. “There is still the vexed matter of teacher licensure exams, the last of it must be concluded not later that 30th August” he announced.
Mr. Iddrissu underscored the fact that, the August 30 date for scrapping the exams will provide adequate timeline to stakeholders who must in turn communicate a date to candidates who wrote earlier but could not excel to go through the process for the last time before it is taken off. ” If there is a last opportunity of those who sat and couldn’t make, that process should not travel beyond 30th August, so you are to work with the registrar, get is a firm date and we put that off.” he instructed.
He further announced a new model that would guide the teacher licensure exams elaborating that the this model for evaluating teacher readiness will go beyond solely paper based exams. “it incorporates assessments, supervised practicum evaluations and structured mentorship programs” he listed. This he explained will ensure that newly trained teachers demonstrate not just theoretical knowledge but actual classroom
competence.
Notably, the teacher licensure exams was introduced in September, 2018 by the previous government as part of the implementation of the Education Act, 2008 (Act 778). This move was in the bid to ensure that graduate teachers possess the necessary skills and requirements to deliver quality teaching services that meets professional standards however, the examination is solely paper based.
The minister during the press briefing have praised the chairman of the committee responsible for reviewing the exams for inculcating practical based models into the scheme in order to provide diverse experiences to candidates and an advanced evaluation platform.
Meanwhile the National Teaching Council have announced that the ministry’s directive to scrap the licensure exams will not affect the upcoming exams come Friday July 18, 2025. Candidates are advised to prepare adequately and show up for the examinations.
