Ghanaian actress and entrepreneur Fella Makafui has opened up about the deeply emotional and traumatic experience surrounding the birth of her daughter, Island, revealing that she was fully conscious throughout her Caesarean section (C-section) procedure.
In a candid interview with Pulse Ghana, the YOLO star recounted how medical professionals opted for a surgical delivery after her baby was found to be in an abnormal position, making a vaginal birth too risky.
“I was actually awake throughout the process,” she revealed. “I had two doctors one on my left and one on my right. I could feel movement inside me as they tried to get the baby out, but there was no pain. They kept asking if I was okay.”
Fella described a particularly distressing moment during the operation. “At one point, I turned and looked to my left and saw a mirror. I could see my stomach it was open. I panicked. It was a terrifying and traumatic sight because I hadn’t realized that was what was happening.”
Despite the initial fear, the arrival of her daughter brought immense joy. “A few minutes later, I heard the baby cry. I just broke down in tears when they brought Island to me. My partner was supposed to be in the room, but I think he was too scared, so they rushed the baby to him outside. It was a beautiful moment despite everything.”
Fella also opened up about the overall challenges of her pregnancy, which she described as physically and emotionally draining.
“The first three months were hell. I was constantly sick, had no appetite, and lost a lot of weight. At a point, I was coughing up blood,” she recalled. “Eventually, I had to accept that a C-section was the safest option because Island couldn’t turn properly. I really wanted to have a natural birth, but I didn’t have a choice.”
Her story sheds light on the hidden struggles many women endure during childbirth and the strength it takes to bring life into the world.
