Fire safety is a crucial aspect of our daily lives, and knowing what to do in case of a fire emergency can mean the difference between life and death.

Unfortunately, many of us are not prepared for such situations, and the consequences can be devastating.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service, fires claim numerous lives and properties every year. The most common causes of fires in Ghanaian homes are electrical faults, cooking accidents, and candle-related incidents.

While prevention is key, knowing what to do when a fire breaks out is equally important.

In this article, we will outline the 5 crucial steps to take when your house catches fire.

“Fire safety is not just about having a fire extinguisher in the house,” says L.F Mawuko Adjorlolo of the Ghana National Fire Service in Central Tongu. “It’s about knowing what to do in case of a fire emergency and taking proactive steps to prevent fires from occurring in the first place.”

So, what should you do when your house catches fire? Here are the 5 crucial steps to take:

  1. Stay Calm and Act Quickly: When a fire breaks out, it’s essential to remain calm and think clearly. Panicking can lead to poor decision-making, which can worsen the situation. Take a few deep breaths, and focus on getting everyone to safety.
  2. Alert Everyone in the House: Shout “Fire!” to alert everyone in the house. Make sure to wake up sleeping family members, especially children and the elderly. Get everyone out of the house quickly and safely.
  3. Call the Fire Department: Once you’re safely outside, call the fire department or emergency services. In Ghana, call them on 192. Provide your address and a brief description of the fire. If you have a phone nearby, take it with you when you exit the house.
  4. Use a Safe Escape Route: Identify a safe escape route before attempting to leave the house. Avoid using elevators, as they can malfunction during a fire. Stay low to the ground while escaping, as smoke and heat rise. Close all doors behind you to help contain the fire.
  5. Meet at a Designated Meeting Point: Designate a meeting point outside the house where everyone can gather once they’ve escaped. This will help you account for everyone’s safety and ensure that no one is left behind. Stay at the meeting point until the fire department arrives.

By following these 5 crucial steps, you can minimize the risk of injury or death in case of a fire emergency. Remember, fire safety is everyone’s responsibility, and taking proactive steps to prevent fires from occurring in the first place is essential.
