Forestry Commission Cracks Down on Illegal Mining in Western Region

By: Kekeli K. Blamey

A joint operation by the Forestry Commission’s Rapid Response team and local authorities has resulted in the arrest of four armed miners at an illegal galamsey camp in the Subri Forest Reserve, near Benso in the Western Region.

The suspects, all Ghanaian nationals, were caught mining in a protected area of significant biodiversity. Confiscated items include:

  • 5 pump action guns
  • 77 rounds of ammunition
  • 3 excavators (burnt on site)

Additional evidence was handed over to the Takoradi police for further investigation.

The arrested individuals – Innussah Yussif, Issah Seidu, Shadrach Yowson, and Emmanuel Adawusu – are alleged to have powerful backers supporting their illicit activities, leading to extensive forest degradation.

This raid is part of intensified efforts to combat rampant illegal mining in Ghana’s forest reserves, particularly in the Takoradi Forest District.
