At the back of Government’s promise to extend the free SHS policy to Private Senoir High Schools in the country, Executive Director of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS), Enoch Nana Kwasi Gyetuah has revealed that the government will be paying a provisional amount of GH¢1500.00 per semester as tuition for each student in order to benefit from the free SHS policy.

Mr. Gyetuah during a media interaction on TV3’s Hot Issues, revealed that the initiative will be rolled out in the next academic year and the said amount will be paid against students who are placed in the selected private institutions by the government. “So the schools (private) have already declared their vacancies for the Free SHS and that has been sent to the Ministry of Education” he elaborated.

In order to avoid overcrowding as seen in some public second cycle institutions, Mr. Gyetuah assured that the government will place students according to the capacity of the selected private schools.

He added that the council is pleased with government’s efforts to extend the free SHS policy to private institutions further commending the government on keeping to its word. “We are very grateful; we must admit that the John Mahama administration has done marvelously well” he remarked.

In a subsequent revelation, Mr. Gyetuah disclosed that the council initially reffered to government’s intention to extend the free SHS policy to private institutions as a political gimmick. “We were even thinking that it might be a political gimmick but now it is in reality and we have met the Ministry of Education, we have met the GES Director, the free SHS Secretariat Coordinator and all of them” he stated.

The initiative is set to commence in the 2025/2026 academic year in September 2025.
