In a bold step to bolster Ghana’s digital economy, GCB Bank has announced plans to become the primary payment gateway for TikTok creators in the country, ensuring secure and seamless compensation for their content.
A delegation from the bank, led by Chief of Staff Mr. Abraham Ferguson, paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), to discuss the proposal. The meeting also brought together TikTok’s West Africa representative, Ms. Tokumbo Ibrahim, signaling a multi-stakeholder commitment to supporting Ghana’s creative industry.
Mr. Ferguson highlighted the bank’s readiness to leverage its strong financial infrastructure to serve the growing needs of content creators. “The bank possesses strong connectivity with MasterCard and Visa, enabling direct acceptance and payout onto cards,” he noted. He further explained that GCB could facilitate payouts through multiple channels, including mobile money and direct bank transfers, to expand accessibility for creators across the country.
Hon. Samuel Nartey George welcomed the proposal, emphasizing that the use of GCB Bank as an official payment channel would eliminate reliance on third-party intermediaries, reduce transaction delays, and protect creators from potential exploitation.
With Ghana’s creative economy witnessing exponential growth through platforms like TikTok, this move positions GCB Bank as a strategic player in digital innovation and financial inclusion. If successful, the initiative could set a precedent for local financial institutions to play a more active role in supporting Africa’s expanding digital and creative industries.
