Ghana Scholars Abroad Champions Mentorship in STEM Education

By Emmanuel Amoah

Ghana Scholars Abroad, a diaspora-based non-governmental organization, is spearheading a mentorship initiative to enhance Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education among Senior High School (SHS) students in Ghana. The organization is implementing this strategy through a series of sensitization programs across various schools.

The scholars have identified mentorship as a crucial factor in career development, particularly in countries where it is an established practice. They are now working to bring this beneficial approach to Ghanaian students.

On July 30, 2024, Ghana Scholars Abroad conducted a significant sensitization program at Wesley Girls Senior High School in Kumasi, reaching hundreds of students. The program offered comprehensive guidance on several key areas, including career planning, selecting tertiary education programs in Ghana and abroad, and effective strategies for university applications and admissions, with a focus on securing scholarships.

As part of their ongoing efforts, Ghana Scholars Abroad is touring Senior High Schools across the Ashanti Region, providing career guidance forums specifically targeted at final-year students. Schools on their itinerary include Prempeh College, Agogo State College, Collins Senior High School, Opoku Ware Senior High School, Yaa Asantewaa Girls School, Kumasi Girls Senior High School, and Wesley Girls Senior High School.

Dr. Maame Serwaah Adubofour, a leading member of the organization, highlighted the critical need for such guidance, noting the lack of accessible information that students face when making career decisions. She emphasized that mentorship can bridge this gap, offering students the support they need to make informed choices.

Peter Sarfo, the Country Representative, announced plans to expand the program to additional schools in other regions in the coming years, with a particular focus on reaching Junior High Schools as well.

Through this mentorship initiative, Ghana Scholars Abroad aims to empower students to make well-informed career choices, thereby reducing the likelihood of errors in their decision-making process and fostering a strong foundation for future success in STEM fields.
