Ghana and South Africa have strengthened their bilateral ties through a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on defence and training cooperation. This agreement was finalized at the conclusion of a two-day Joint Defence Committee Meeting held behind closed doors, aimed at reaffirming the friendship and operationalizing an earlier Defence Cooperation Agreement signed in February 2023.

The MOU was officially signed on Tuesday in Accra by representatives from the militaries of both countries. Brigadier-General Winfried Dzandu-Hedidor, Director-General in Charge of Training at the General Headquarters of the Ghana Armed Forces, highlighted the significance of this agreement in fostering collaboration between the armed forces of Ghana and South Africa.

A key focus of the MOU is the enhancement of training programs for personnel from both nations’ armed forces. “This aspect of the defence cooperation seeks to foster collaboration between the South African Defence Forces and the Ghana Armed Forces,” stated Brigadier-General Dzandu-Hedidor. He further emphasized that the recommendations and ideas derived from the meeting, along with the MOU, will contribute to peace and security in the subregion and across the continent.

Deputy Minister of Defence, Mr. Kofi Amankwa-Manu, expressed optimism that the emerging issues discussed during the meeting will be carefully considered and effectively implemented.

This agreement marks a significant step in strengthening the defence partnership between Ghana and South Africa, promoting mutual growth and stability in the region.
