President John Mahama is set to open the highly anticipated Education Review Conference in mid-February 2025, according to Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education. The conference aims to examine the current state and future of education in Ghana, making recommendations to improve the sector, achieve equity, and produce high-quality human capacity for the country.
The Education Minister made this announcement during a press briefing in Accra, marking International Day of Education, which is celebrated on January 24. This year’s global theme, “Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” highlights the impact of AI on education, offering opportunities to personalize learning, automate tasks, and expand access to underserved communities.
Mr. Iddrisu emphasized the need for strong partnerships to bridge the gaps in AI, ensuring high-quality education reaches remote areas and fostering inclusivity through adaptive technologies. He also stressed the importance of empowering educators to create inclusive classrooms and design curricula that embed digital literacy, AI ethics, and critical thinking skills.
The Minister called on stakeholders to work towards a future where education remains equitable, inclusive, and responsive to the challenges and opportunities of the time. He commended the efforts of stakeholders in the education ecosystem, acknowledging their dedication to advancing the transformative power of learning.
To leverage the opportunities in AI, the government plans to expand fibre and broadband infrastructure to all educational institutions, providing access to the internet. Mr. Iddrisu emphasized the importance of internet connectivity in preparing for a digital literacy future, highlighting the need for collaboration with the Ministry of Communication and private sectors to ensure stable internet connectivity.
