The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has unleashed a scathing attack on President Akufo-Addo’s Founders’ Day statement, accusing him of distorting history and downplaying Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s pivotal role in Ghana’s independence.
The party vehemently disagrees with the President’s assertion that Ghana’s founding was a collective effort, insisting that Nkrumah was the sole founder of the nation.
The CPP views the President’s remarks as a deliberate attempt to misrepresent history and undermine Nkrumah’s legacy. They argue that Akufo-Addo’s words are part of a larger pattern by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to promote historical inaccuracies and diminish Nkrumah’s contributions to Ghana’s independence.
In a press release issued on August 4, signed by Patrick Nelson Sogbodjor, chairperson of the party’s Independent Committee, cautioned the government to focus on leaving a lasting legacy rather than continually trying to tarnish Nkrumah’s reputation. They emphasized that Nkrumah is a deeply revered figure in Ghana and Africa, and his legacy deserves to be respected and celebrated.
As the country continues to grapple with its past, many are calling for a more nuanced approach to celebrating Ghana’s history but one thing is clear, Nkrumah’s legacy remains a powerful symbol of Ghana’s struggle for independence and self-determination.
