The Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament has issued an ultimatum to President John Dramani Mahama, warning that they will withdraw their cooperation in Parliament if the president fails to address the ongoing post-electoral violence.
The caucus claims that the violence and destruction of state property are being perpetrated by individuals affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to prevent the Electoral Commission from declaring the Ablekuma North Parliamentary election results in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the Second Deputy Minority Whip, the president must take immediate action to restore law and order.
“The president cannot pretend to be unaware of the lawlessness and violence in the country,” Shaib said. “We call on the Ghana Police Service, the IGP, and the Election Security Taskforce to enforce law and order without hesitation.”
The Minority Caucus is demanding protection for Electoral Commission officials and stakeholders in the electoral process. “They are Ghanaians just like us,” Shaib emphasized.
If the president fails to take action, the caucus vows to protest through lawful means and withdraw their cooperation in Parliament.
