The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has launched a cholera vaccination exercise in Accra, targeting over 300,000 residents in the capital.
The campaign, which kicked off today, is part of the national response plan to contain the growing cholera outbreak that has already claimed more than 40 lives and infected over 4,000 people across five regions.
According to the GHS, the vaccination exercise will focus on residents in the Greater Accra, Eastern, Central, Ashanti, and Western regions, where the outbreak is most severe.
Cholera, a highly contagious bacterial infection, spreads primarily through contaminated food and water, leading to severe diarrhea, dehydration, and even death.
Health officials attribute the outbreak to poor sanitation, inadequate access to clean water, and unhygienic food handling practices.
The Ministry of Health and the GHS are distributing oral cholera vaccines (OCV) in targeted communities, which provide short-term protection against the disease.
The GHS has emphasized the importance of this vaccination campaign, urging residents to participate and take proactive measures to prevent the spread of cholera.
