The Ghana Revenue Authority has announced Wednesay, July 16 for the implementation of the newly introduced GH¢1 fuel levy to salvage the ailing energy sector economy.
The Energy Sector (Amendment) Levy which was passed in parliament on June 2 was expected to take off on an initial scheduled date of June 9, 2025. Admist several criticisms and protests from oil marketing companies and the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union, the roll out was set for a latter date of Monday, June 16, 2025.
However, on June 13, GRA in compliance to a directive from the Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson and relevant stakeholders within the Energy Sector Industry announced the indefinite suspension of the roll out of the energy levy (referred to as the dumsor levy). To this end, the Minority Caucus in Parliament who have opposed the levy during early stages called for the repealment citing financial burden to the Ghanaian populace.
In reference to the June 13 notice indicating the indefinite suspension of the levy, GRA in a notice has announced July 16 for the effective rollout of the levy. “We are pleased to inform you that following a thorough review of prevailing market indicators and in line with Government’s commitment to ensuring stable economic conditions, the implementation of the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment ) Act, 2025 (Act 1141) will now commence effective 16th July, 2025. it wrote.
Significantly, vehicle owners will pay a GH¢1 levy on every litre of fuel bought at the various pumps effective July 16. The levy is intended to help salvage the crisis plaguing Ghana’s Energy Sector.
